India has announced an additional contribution USD 5,000,000 to the AsEAN-India science & technology fund in order to improve cooperation in the sectors of smart agriculture, renewable energy, and public health.

This announcement was made during the three day visit of Vice President Jagdeep Dahankhar from India to Cambodia for ASEAN India and East Asia summits. Vice President Dhankhar spoke out about global concerns regarding food security and energy security . He also highlighted the importance of the East Asia Summit’s (EAS) mechanism to promote open, inclusive, and free-floating Indo-Pacific.

Information about the ASEAN-India Science & Technology Partnership:

The ASEAN-India Science & Technology Collaborative was officially established in 1996 by the establishment of the ASEAN India S&T working Group (AIWGST).

In the beginning, collaboration S&T activities between India and ASEAN was supported by the ASEAN India Fund. However, in 2008, a dedicated ASEAN India S&T Development Fund (AISTDF ) with an equal amount of USD1 million was created jointly by the Ministry of External Affairs and Department of Science and Technology (DST). This fund supports R&D projects and related project development activities.

An announcement by the Prime Minster of India at the ASEAN India Summit in Malaysia November 2015, saw the AISTDF increase to USD 5 million.
